Skepta just won £250,000 and beat king Davie Bowie to win this years Mercury prize – and has now been nominated for 3 MOBO Awards.
So if you have some how managed to sleep through the past few days, out of a shortlist that included stars such as Radiohead and David Bowie, for the first time in a few years – people in power managed to make a decision that was actually representative of was this generation wanted.
Although, Konnichiwa was mostly made up of old songs from the past few years – this long awaited release still gained attention from fans old & new – as well as getting a lot of young kids into UK Grime. Although these awards might not be the most critically acclaimed, this is still a massive triumph for DIY and black culture.
Following this recent win, the MOBO nominations were released – showing Skepta to be in the running for Best Male, Best Album and Best Grime Act.
I’m also take this time to appreciate Kano’s nomination for the same award and 4 MOBOs, (if you haven’t managed to take a listen to Made in the Manor have a look here), for also being a well deserving candidate. Hailing from East London Grime Crew, N.A.S.T.Y, with the likes of D Double E and Ghetts – the album is insanely good and a well deserving nomination.
